Vintage Homeschool Education - FREE!!

Have you ever been amazed at how well educated Laura was from Little House On The Prairie???  Or maybe how your grandma or grandpa or maybe even great G's were able to do math ..IN THEIR HEADS?!?!?!     Or how Charles Dickens was an everyday read that MOST educated people could read?  As in he was a #1 best selling author of his time?    Isn't it interesting that most people now don't read above the 5th grade level??  Well here's how you can remedy that problem and give your kids a GREAT education for FREE!!!

Here are some posts on my use of vintage education

The Eclectic Manual Of Methods  This is the manual on how to teach ALL the other books - It is a MUST!

Reading - Writing  (aka Language Arts)

***Please keep in mind that the numbers on the Mcguffey's DO NOT represent their grade level.  They did not have grades when they were written.  If they are the revised edition (6 books multi colored spine and boards) they cover approximately 2 years so the primer is K-2 and the 6th is 11-12th grade.  You use them for reading, copywork etc.  If they are the original (brown spine and boards by Mott Media) they cover approximately 3 years per book so the 1st would be 1-3 and the 4th would be 10-12.

The major difference between the original 1836 (brown) and the revised is the original used sight words and was quite religious in tone and was written by William Holmes McGuffey where as the revised (colorful) Mcguffey's removed a bit of the religious tone and used phonics.  The revised was not done by William Holmes McGuffey but his brother.

Here is a great series of post by Sherry over at Large Family Mothering that explains how to use the McGuffeys as a complete Language Arts Program...there are 6 posts in the series and are WONDERFUL!

Here is Sherry's post on using old math texts like  Ray's Arithmetic

Here is where the originals (brown) McGuffey's are sold with a more expansive explanation.
